Introducing Kellerbier

Spring 2010

St Georgen Brau

James Clay are delighted to introduce something of an exclusive in the arrival of the St. Georgen Bräu 'Kellerbier'.

As you will appreciate, Germany has many wonderful and distinct brewing styles beyond the  pilsners and wheat beers, and Kellerbier may not be something you're familiar with due to the fact that most are only served locally in Germany.

Literally translated as 'cellar beer', Keller Bier is an unpasturised and unfiltered lager which is allowed to settle in solid oak barrels before being tapped; the result is a naturally cloudy and strongly hopped beer, often brewed to an Okoberfestbier-Märzenbier strength of around 5 to 5.3% abv.

Kellerbiers are great as aperitifs served before dinner to stimulate the appetite.

The St. Georgen Bräu Kellerbier is based in the small Franconian village of Buttenheim, just south of Bamberg, and the brewery has been in the same family since 1624. Its distinctive Kellerbier is aged in sturdy unbunged oak casks in rock caverns on the outskirts of the village (it has always been done this way, even after the invention of refrigeration).

“We're really excited about the arrival of the Kellerbier.” comments Nigel Stevenson, our speciality beer consultant, “To be able to include such a great beer, with an amazing heritage, to the James Clay portfolio further underlines our commitment to introducing the best in world beers to the UK market.”

Kellerbier is available in 20 x 50cl nrb. bottles exclusively from James Clay from 7th June 2010.
