Good Kolsch it's Summer

Spring 2010

Fruh cap

With the prospect of warmer days and sunshine ahead, we take a look at some beers to consider for Summer – perfect for the beer garden, a sunny terrace or enjoying just about anywhere!

A style distinctive to the German city of Cologne, the name Kölsch is protected by law so that only beers brewed in and around the city can genuinely bear the name. Kölsch beers are characteristically light in appearance with a straw-yellow colour, with prominent (yet not extreme) hoppiness and less bitter than typical German pilsners.

Fruh tavern

Früh is well regarded in the city and one of the best Kölsch’s, with probably the most famous place to enjoy a Kölsch being the Tavern Früh near to the Cathedral in Cologne. A dangerously drinkable beer with an unsurpassed balance of malt and soft delicate hops, pale gold in colour with a good lasting head, the hoppy, dry finish is acquired from using Hallertau and Tettnang hops.

Küppers Kölsch was for many years a lager brewery near Düsseldorf, but the owning family opened a brewery in Cologne in the 1960s and moved into Kölsch production - they could see the growing popularity of this local speciality ale and began exporting beyond its traditional heartland.
