Lindeboom - where the James Clay story begins.

July 2011

In keeping with the season itself, we’ve been a little bit slow with our summer edition of Brewhouse but don’t be fooled into thinking we’re in any way behind the game when it comes to the best beers to enjoy in the sunshine.

Back in the 1982, on a regular visit to the low countries of Europe, we happened to call upon the small family Bierbrouwerij Lindeboom, in the Limburg region of Holland.

At the time we had already been importing modest amounts of this lovely Dutch lager for sale at our own pub, The Moorings in Halifax, and was a firm favourite with regulars.

We had made the decision to leave the pub and become importers and distributors, and Lindeboom Pilsener was the immediate choice for our first beer.

Like us the brewery was (and still is) independent and very much a family concern: some say headstrong but we just like to think we know what we like. Maybe Yorkshire and Limburg have something in common?

The one thing for certain is we both definitely appreciate is this fine beer.

And what’s not to love: an incredibly drinkable and fruity pilsener with a bitter mix of herbal hops and malt, with a dry, lime-like hoppiness at the finish. It weighs in at a solid 5.0% Abv. but is as light and refreshing as any of the 4.0% crowd and, unlike it’s mass-market counterparts, you can be assured that this is still a continental beer with heritage.

“Lindeboom Pilsener has always been a great beer for any bars ‘dipping a toe’ into specialist beers: there’s no denying that draught or bottled lager is a staple of any establishment, and Lindeboom offers a great alternative to the usual suspects.” comments Andrew Asquith of James Clay.

“We know certain words are applied far too liberally and far too many average beers, but by listing Lindeboom Pilsener you’re offering customers a premium imported lager, proud recipient of many high accolades and well worthy of it’s ‘specialist’ association.”

We’re still very much fans of Lindeboom and look forward to importing this fine pilsener for another 30 years at least.

If you’re yet to have the pleasure, just contact one of our team on 01422 377 560 and we’ll arrange for a bottle or two of Limburg’s finest to head your way.
