Achel Blonde is a classic Belgian Tappist beer, and a quintessential blonde. A little spot of sweetness and candied yeasts, but the dominant flavours are of pale malts and delicious cereal.

A touch of caramel in the brune gives a smooth toastiness. Situated 20 miles south of Eindhoven but over the frontier with Belgium, the newest Trappist brewery resembles a brewpub. Father Thomas of Westmalle started the brewery, the current brewer is Brother Jules.

First introduced in 1975, Liberty Ale is brewed with a top-fermenting ale yeast, responsible for many of the subtle flavours and characteristics. Dry-hopping imparts a unique aroma to the ale.
A strong barley wine, dry hopped throughout the maturation period of some 6 months. Although the yeast is unable to ferment all sugars out of any beer at this strength the hop flavours make a balanced brew ideal for sipping after dinner.

Brewed by Lefebvre just south of Brussels the beer named after the city is a light, fruity wit bier with typical cloudiness because the yeast remains in suspension. The neck label depicts the famous 'Mannekin Pis'.

Blanche des Honnelles has an amber colour and is also stronger than many white beers. If the bouquet is subdued its first flavour is a stark dry sharpness against a pepper background. There is no acidity in this Blanche that is made with three cereals (barley, wheat, oats). It has a stimulating taste, leaving a subdued but refreshing final impression. Lots of character and curious.

Originally from the brewery Gouden Boom (golden tree) in Bruges a flowery triple style beer with a slightly sweeter flavour than is usual for this style of beer. The beer has an aromatically toasty maltiness balanced by Goldings hop character.

A small family brewer located near the Belgian border, Budels uses organically cultivated malt and hops and is brewed using 'green power' following agreements with local electricity suppliers. The beer itself is a high quality pilsener withy a crisp dry flavour.

Gueuze is a blend of young and old lambic beer, producing another fermentation and more maturation (for up to another year). A fruitier taste and champagne sparkle emerges and a slightly sour flavour is a characteristic of this style of beer. This is a highly acclaimed dry slightly bitter gueuze.

Cantillon Kriek is not artificially sweetened like all the other krieks you'll find on the shelf; authentic kriek is sour and very, very tart. This beer is not for beginners, but those in the know will agree with virtually every respected beer writer that this is the world-classic cherry lambic.

The process to make this beer is identical to the one to make Kriek. When young, the Rosé de Gambrinus will still present its full fruity taste. Later on, the lambic taste will become dominant at the expense of the fruit taste.
