Schlenkerla At A Glance
The secret of Schlenkerla Smokebeer lies in the kilning of the malt.
Unlinke many modern breweries, Schlenkerla has preserved the old craft tradition of smoking the malt and today still operate their own malthouse complete with a beechwood log fire underneath the kiln in the brewery maltings which imparts the delicate smoky flavour.
In effect, there's little piece of brewing history in every beer.
More than just a brewery, the history of the Schlenkerla Tavern building starts together with that of the monastery, which was founded in the 14th century.
For many in the town of Bamberg and surrounding areas, Schlenkerla is a focal point; where the beer is tapped directly from oak kegs and the warm welcome is as famous as the beer. Many have tried to describe Schlenkerla, but one really has to experience it to understand!
The Little Dangler
Bamberg and Rauchbier belong together, a historic liaison which was not without consequences. Schlenkerla has become a magic word for a long time, but many do not know where this word originated.
"Schlenkern" is an expression for walking not straight - just like a drunken person does. Allegedly one of the former brewers had a funny way of walking due to an accident, or maybe due to the beer, and so he was called the "Schlenkerla" - the little dangler.
Visit Schlenkerla and you'll find the motto on the the beer mats: "Even if the brew tastes somewhat strange at the first swallow, do not stop - because soon you will realise that your thirst will not decrease and your pleasure will visibly increase."
