Bamberg brewery Schlenkerla are renowned for one particular style, the enigmatic Rauchbier, or ‘smoke beer’. Schlenkerla are a thoroughly traditional operation, drying their own malt, which few breweries have done since the industrial revolution. And that makes for one tasty, smoky brew.

Though most smoked beers now use modern gas or electric heating methods, Schlenkerla have held tight to the skills developed by generation after generation of brewers, making their Rauchbier one of the last old-style brews on the market.

Schlenkerla is as much a beer hall as it is a brewer. To really experience the beer in its home environment, a trip to beautiful, Gothic Bamberg is in order. The city is worth exploring in its own right, but the Schlenkerla tavern is a riot of dark oak beams and ornate flourishes.

That just leaves the name. Schlenkerla roughly translates as ‘dangling’, describing the tipsy stagger of a rosy-faced drinker, apparently a nickname for an early brewer with a hobble. So grab a Rauchbier and get dangle-y.

Rauchbier Marzen

Style: Rauchbier
ABV: 5.1%
This classic Bamberg beer has a distinct aroma through its palate to a clean, dry finish and a wonderful flavour which may come as a bit of a shock at first! The smoked flavour comes from a beechwood log fire used to dry the germinated malt during Kilning process.

Schlenkerla Weichsel Rotbier

Style: Cherry Wood Smoked Red Lager
ABV: 4.60%
Red beers used to be more common in Franconia. The city of Nuremberg in particular was known for its red beer. Since it was extremely complex to produce, red beer was replaced in the 19th century by brown beer, which was made using modern, simpler brewing processes, and then disappeared. It wasn't until 1997 that the beer style was revived. For our Aecht Schlenkerla Weichsel red beer, we dry the malt over a fire with high-quality cherry wood and not over a beech wood fire, as is the case with classic smoked beer. In contrast to the spicy beech smoked malt, the cherry smoked malt has a fruity, almost sweet smoky aroma and gives the glass a copper-red color. The finest aroma hops complement the complex smoky flavor with a berry note. With 4.6% alcohol, Aecht Schlenkerla Weichsel is a full-bodied, pleasantly drinkable beer.
